Event Date: 22nd March 2025
Location: 12 noon: Leafletting action in Barrow town centre, 1-3pm: Rally on the High Level Bridge over Devonshire Dock
The BAE Systems’ shipyard at Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria has been at the centre of Britain’s nuclear weapons system for decades. It is building Britain’s next generation of nuclear-armed submarines – the Dreadnought – at an estimated cost of £205 billion.
Each of these Dreadnought subs will be able to carry up to 40 nuclear warheads – with just one powerful enough to kill one million people.
CND is protesting at Barrow on Saturday 22 March, as part of our national tour of nuclear bases across Britain. We’ll be putting the spotlight on both the huge dangers and financial costs of these bases. They are a stark symbol of Britain’s deadly nuclear weapons – which threaten us all. With nuclear tensions at their highest in years, Barrow would be on the frontline of any nuclear attacks.
Can you join us for a day of action in Barrow on Saturday, 22 March? We’re protesting against the next generation of Britain’s nuclear weapons. We’re calling for the billions wasted to instead be used to drive sustainable economic growth in health, education and tackling climate change – and all the jobs this would create.

The government is trying to justify billions more for military spending, saying it will drive economic growth. But cutting vital public services to boost more profits for arms companies, will only increase the threat of war and decimate communities.
Meanwhile, communities like Barrow, dominated by a single arms company like BAE, live with the threat of nuclear accidents on their doorstep. Just last year a serious fire at the Shipyard damaged the hall where a Dreadnought nuclear submarine was being assembled. And thousands of iodine tablets are distributed to nurseries and care homes ‘in the event of a nuclear emergency’.
Instead areas like Barrow need government investment in jobs diversification programmes, providing communities with decent jobs that don’t threaten people and planet!
