We oppose and condemn the bombing of Venezuela and kidnapping of its president Nicolas Maduro by the US. It is an outrage which is a war crime, a breach of international law and shows complete contempt for the people of Venezuela. It is the latest in Donald Trump’s imperialist interventions, one signalled by his national defence strategy outlining the US intention to force regime change in the ‘Western hemisphere’.
This has nothing to do with democracy or the war on drugs but is about Venezuela’s oil and natural resources and about trying to enforce pro-US policies in countries such as Venezuela and Cuba.
Despite Trump’s claims to want peace his belligerence knows no bounds. In recent weeks he has bombed Syria and Nigeria, supported Israel in its Gaza genocide, and has Iran in its sights.
The British government should condemn the forced removal of Maduro and attack on Venzuela. They must call for an immediate cessation of military action by the US and the return of Maduro to his country.
There is an urgent need for solidarity with Venezuela. The Stop the War Coalition is organising with the Venezuela Solidarity Campaign and CND for an online rally tomorrow (Sunday 4 January), and a protest at Downing Street on Monday evening (5 January).
We urge local groups to organise solidarity actions as soon as possible and to raise the issue in trade unions, community campaigns and colleges.
Trump has set the pattern for intervention at the beginning of a new year. We know the world is hurtling towards further wars. Governments are ramping up arms spending and militarism. That means building and strengthening Stop the War has never been more urgent. We ask all our supporters to do the following:
Get organised with meetings and activity in every locality.
Build the International Peace Conference in London on 20 June.
Thanks for your support on this. We need to start the new year as we mean to go on – stepping up our organising against militarism and war.
