Witnessing the occupation - Life in the West Bank

Event Date: 19th May 2026
Location: Online, 3pm

Join us today for a powerful and timely conversation with Tim Livesey and Julia Race, who have both recently returned from three months in the occupied West Bank as Ecumenical Accompaniers – international human rights monitors living alongside Palestinian communities under occupation.

Drawing on their firsthand experiences in Bethlehem and across the West Bank, Tim and Julia will reflect on daily life under occupation, the realities facing Palestinian communities on the ground, and what they witnessed during a period of extraordinary tension and violence.

Tim Livesey first visited Palestine in 1987, just weeks before the outbreak of the first intifada, and has returned many times since. His distinguished career has included roles as a UK diplomat, senior adviser to the Archbishops of Canterbury and Westminster, Chief of Staff to Ed Miliband during his leadership of the Labour Party, and Chief Executive of Embrace the Middle East.

Julia Race spent much of her career with the British Council, with postings including Cairo, Cape Town, Rome and Brussels. She now advises organisations internationally on governance, fundraising and external relations. She first visited Israel and Palestine in 2007 and has long taken an active interest in the region.

Together, they will offer personal insight into what it means to accompany communities living under military occupation and why international witnessing still matters.
