Dear Peace Group supporter,
This is to remind you to come to our celebration of international co-operation and friendship. The week is Refugee Week, and we are inviting anyone currently living in Abingdon to join us in an informal “International Gathering” on Tuesday 16th June from 6-9pm in St Ethelwold’s garden. We are calling it “A Better World for Tomorrow” and are hosting it jointly with Host Abingdon, International Welcome and One Planet Abingdon, as many of our international community have been displaced from their own countries by climate change as well as war. We want it to be a community-building event. Bring & share some food if you feel like it – soft drinks and music will be provided by our international friends.
The second event for your diary is our annual Lantern Floating ceremony on Hiroshima Day, Thursday August 6th, when we remember the first use of nuclear weapons on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The event starts at 7pm with a short ceremony at the Peace Pole in St Ethelwold’s Garden, and since 2024 the Mayor of Abingdon has welcomed everyone to the event. Our guest of honour is a teacher from Hiroshima who will give a speech, before we light the lanterns (made by children in Hiroshima schools) and process to the river to float them.
Come and meet your fellow Peace Group supporters, Host Abingdon and International Gathering supporters, and those from One PLanet Abingdon!
Peace,
Sally Reynolds,
Secretary, Abingdon Peace Group
