Event Date: 14th March 2021
Location: Internet 2:30pm
Dear friends,
I would like to inform you about an event which is taking place this Sunday and is organised by the Global Campaign on Military Spending UK (GCOMS UK).
The Global Campaign on Military Spending UK (GCOMS UK) was set up last year, and it is developing into a very useful network and alliance through which work to promote demilitarisation can be advanced in an intersectional way and in alliance with various oppressed and disenfranchised communities. In order for the peace movement to be truly effective and democratic, it is essential for there to be grassroots involvement in its campaigns. This is why we are very open to contributions from grassroots peace activists.
Our first action was a twitter action #UKDefundWar, which included over 500 participants and reached over 1.3 million Twitter accounts.
In the midst of the pandemic the UK government has announced the biggest percentage increase in military spending in almost 70 years. The military budget is being increased by over £24 billion over the next 4 years. These extra public funds are largely being invested/squandered on a deeply worrying new arms race, while many social and ecological needs are not being met.
This Sunday (14th March) at 2.30pm GCOMS UK will be having a grassroots planning meeting in advance of the Global Days of Action against Military Spending from the 10th April – 9th May. Everyone is welcome to come to this meeting so we can discuss how we can build grassroots support for demilitarisation. Please join us to shape the campaign.
