On July 8, 1996, as a result of an initiative led by civil society, the International Court of Justicedelivered an advisory opinion affirming that the threat or use of nuclear weapons is generally illegal, and that there is an obligation to achieve global nuclear disarmament.

Inspired by this historic case, World’s Youth for Climate Justice, supported by the Normandy Chair for Peace, has launched a campaign to take the issue of climate change to the International Court of Justice (otherwise known as the World Court).

Power of the People:
An animated introduction to the World Court & Climate Change initiative

Why is climate litigation important? Why go to the World Court?

Current national policies/plans and international Climate agreements (such as the Paris Agreement) are inadequate to address the climate threat because they are subject to the political power of vested interests in the fossil fuel economy. Litigation puts human rights and law at the front, and establishes legal responsibility to ensure protection of current and future generations.

Join the webinar on Monday June 28 or Wednesday June 30

UNFOLD ZERO encourages you to find out more about the initiative, and how you can help ensure its success. Join one or more of a series of webinars, the first one of which will discuss the role of climate litigation, introduce the campaign for an ICJ case on climate change, and explore lessons learned from the historic ICJ advisory opinion on nuclear weapons.
