Dear UK ICAN Partners,
I’m writing to let you know about the upcoming Peace & Justice (Scotland) Peace Cranes exhibition and to ask your help to promote it by sharing the following with your contacts via email or social media.
Peace Cranes
An exhibition by Peace & Justice (Scotland)
6 -28 August 2021.
At the Just Festival 2021, part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
St. John’s Church on Princes Street, Edinburgh. And Online.
See the Exhibition event webpage here.
During August St. John’s Church in Edinburgh will become a bird sanctuary to peace and planet through a new monumental installation by artist Janis Hart. 140,000 fledgling paper cranes will be released, all hand crafted from origami paper by hundreds of adults and children from Scotland to Japan.
The Peace Cranes exhibition will address the twin existential threats of nuclear weapons and the climate and ecological emergencies, and raise awareness of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
The exhibition will be a space for wonder, hope and reflection on the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the great acceleration of species extinction through the origami symbol of the endangered red-crowned crane, the original inspiration for the origami crane that has become an icon for our hopes for nuclear disarmament.
The exhibition will be free and COVID safe in the big open space of St John’s Church, Edinburgh so that everyone who wants to can visit in person.
Several free online Exhibition events will be taking place that everyone is welcome to attend including:
Never Again – Louder Than Bombs
Date: August 6
Time: 06:30 pm – 07:30 pm. Online.
Join Peter Kennard, Britain’s most influential political artist, and Kate Hudson General Secretary of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, to discuss how art changes minds.
In 1963 a CND poster titled Stop Nuclear Suicide, F H K Henrion integrated a mushroom cloud with a macabre grinning skull. Twenty years later artist Peter Kennard wanted to inject renewed meaning into images of nuclear war which, he felt, had become clichéd.
