No Future in Nukes

Event Date: 2nd November 2021
Location: Internet 6:30pm-7:30pm GMT

No Future in Nukes: Young Labour and a nuclear free foreign policy focusses on the continuing need to campaign for the Labour Party to adopt a progressive foreign policy based on peace and justice and builds on the policy successes at annual conference. Young Labour’s Palestine motion, called out apartheid in Palestine and supported sanctions on Israel, and the Labour CND-promoted emergency motion on AUKUS, passed with a massive majority.

We’ll be joined by Jess Barnard Chair of Young Labour, and Labour CND’s Sam Mason, also a campaigner for Greener Jobs Alliance, who will be reporting on COP26.

MPs Apsana Begum and Richard Burgon will also be with us, as will Tribune Editor Ronan Burtenshaw, Gemma Bolton from the Labour NEC and Stop the War Chair Shelly Asquith.

With the risks of catastrophic climate change evident in extreme weather conditions, now is the time to put all political energies and investment into tackling this most serious global security risk. Instead the Tory government is diverting billions into its ‘Global Britain’ project of military expansionism. The latest example is its new military pact with the US and Australia – called AUKUS – a dangerous escalation with China.

So, how does the Labour left continue the struggle for a non-aligned foreign policy, focussed on peace and justice? And what is the foreign policy Labour needs to win for young people?

At Party Conference Labour CND-promoted emergency motion opposing the AUKUS military pact passed with a massive majority. And Young Labour led the way on foreign policy with a historic motion calling out apartheid in Palestine and calling for sanctions on Israel.

This is an opportunity to get organised and plan what’s next.
