Positive peace from schools to the world
Alyn Ware, a peace educator and international disarmament campaigner from New Zealand, was
awarded the Right Livelihood Award in 2009 in honour of his work developing and implementing peace education in New Zealand schools, and for his leadership in national and international campaigns to abolish nuclear weapons. He now serves as Director of the
Basel Peace Office and Global Coordinator of
Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament and is a co-founder of
UNFOLD ZERO.
In this discussion, Mr Ware will highlight the
links between peace education in schools and the elimination of war. The conflict resolution principles that are the basis of peace education find parallels in the common security approaches to international relations. In New Zealand, the introduction of peace studies in schools, supported by the government, was undertaken alongside a parallel process to ban nuclear weapons and reshape foreign policy. Peace education therefore has relevance to critical security issues today such as the Ukraine crisis and the threat of nuclear war.
Joining the discussion will be

Spring Semester 2022
The May 12 event is part of a
Sustainability Now lecture series, organised by the Sustainability Team and the
Right Livelihood Centre of the University of Zurich. Right Livelihood Laureates report on their engagement in different thematic fields of sustainable development. In the subsequent panels, these experiences will be reflected on from the perspective of research, politics and civil society.
The laureates discuss global societal challenges and cross-disciplinary issues such as human rights, social inequality, biodiversity loss and resource scarcity. Each lecture focuses on a specific aspect of sustainable development, such as
Indigenous peoples as guardians of biodiversity,
The harassment of civil society in the Russian autocracy,
Successful solutions for reforestation with the people, and
Responsible science and transformation for the future. The lectures are held online via Zoom and mostly in English. For more information
