An invitation to a very special webinar jointly held by Mayors for Peace and the Nuclear Free Local Authorities

Please see attached an invitation to join a very special webinar being jointly organised by the Mayors for Peace European Chapter (of which Manchester is a proud member) and the UK/Ireland Nuclear Free Local Authorities on 25 May, 10-11am (CENTRAL EUROPEAN TIME, i.e. one hour ahead of BRITISH SUMMER TIME).

In June 2022, the Member States of the United Nations which have ratified or signed the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, as well as their supporters in the NGO community and civil society will come together for the historic First Meeting of the States Parties (1MSP) in Vienna. This is the first time in the nuclear age that these weapons of mass destruction have been banned under international law and 1MSP represents the first opportunity for the international community, nations and citizens, opposed to nuclear weapons to come together to celebrate that achievement and to begin to plan the way ahead to finally achieve abolition.

This event aims at informing local governments and partners about 1MSP. The webinar will foster local governments’ engagement with this issue and their involvement in securing their respective countries’ participation in the MSP1. It will bring together key partners of Mayors for Peace, local government practitioners, advocates and experts to discuss the relevance of nuclear disarmament for achieving security and to explore pathways for local government to advance this vision.

Keynote speakers include:

• His Excellency, Ambassador Alexander Kmentt, President of the First Meeting of the States Parties 
• Beatrice Fihn, Executive Director of ICAN and recipient of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize
• Councillor David Blackburn, Chair of the Nuclear Free Local Authorities UK/Ireland
