d. Tim Street ; ; ‘Avoiding nuclear war in a volatile world’
The first part of the talk will focus on current nuclear threats, with a focus on the Ukraine conflict. For example, how likely is the use of nuclear weapons by Russia and the US? I will also discuss the UK’s role in the conflict, nuclear modernisation, and how militarisation relates to environmental degradation and competition for resources. The second part of my talk will consider: the alternatives to war involving the US / NATO and Russia / China; what domestic political change is required to keep the peace and prioritise disarmament; and the importance of activism in achieving this.
Bio ; Dr Tim Street, nuclear weapons researcher. Tim is the Secretary of British Pugwash and a board member of Nuclear Information Service. He is the author of ‘The Politics of Nuclear Disarmament’ (Routledge, 2021).
