Say No To Defence Spending!
Now’s the time to say no to defence spending, whether it’s on the streets, or in our workplaces and unions.
The TUC Congress last month narrowly approved a resolution instructing the general council to “campaign for immediate increases in defence spending.” STWC lobbied against this dangerous and damaging decision, coming within a few votes of defeating it and garnering much individual support.
As STWC’s Deputy President, Andrew Murray notes; “The movement must realise that the price of a campaign to increase defence spending will literally end up being paid in blood around the world.
Foreign policy and defence strategy are class issues just as much as the domestic agenda. The elite that crashed the economy in 2008 and gave us years of austerity is now trying to force ordinary people to pay for a cost-of-living crisis of capitalism’s making. This will only make things worse.”
The World at War: A Trade Union Issue – Stop the War TU Conference
Not only do we say Trade Unionists must organise to reverse that TUC policy we are already looking ahead to 2023 with added urgency. If this year has shown us anything, it’s that the cost of living crisis, trade union issues, and strike action are intrinsically linked to the war agenda.
That’s is we have called our first ever trade union conference because we believe that it is always working people who are the first victims of war and that the record sums being spent on arms and the military should be redirected to public services.
We believe that the slogan ‘cut warfare not welfare’ should be taken up by the whole of the trade union movement.
The conference is open to all trade unionists. We urge you to register now and also help us spread the word in your branches and trades councils.
