Peace Talks Now - Stop the War in Ukraine - Protest

Event Date: 25th February 2023
Location: Assemble 12 noon, Portland Place, London (opposite the BBC)

There’s still time to build for Saturday’s national demo!

Tomorrow marks the first anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine but the fighting and killing is set to continue. Today, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said the war is likely to continue for at least another year – and expects NATO members to send fighter jets to Ukraine. The escalation towards nuclear war is gathering pace. So we need as many people as possible on the streets this Saturday – joining mobilisations across Europe demanding immediate peace talks.

March with CND this Saturday: part of the Europe-wide protests for peace

Vladimir Putin’s suspension of the New START treaty is the latest escalation in the dangerous game being played by the nuclear powers. As the invasion of Ukraine approaches its first anniversary, the killing and misery is set to continue as heavy weaponry continues to flow into the country.

CND is asking our supporters to join us in London this Saturday, for a national demonstration to call for peace in Ukraine and to speak out against a new nuclear arms race.

  • Saturday, 25 February
  • Assemble 12 noon, Portland Place, London (opposite the BBC)
  • March followed by rally, details here

We demand the immediate removal of Russian troops from Ukraine, an end to NATO’s escalation of the conflict, and for the UK government to engage in securing a diplomatic solution to the war – instead of using it as a pretext for more defence spending during a cost of living crisis.

But we’re not alone! Voices for a speedy and peaceful conclusion to war are growing across Europe. In Germany, a petition calling on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to lead peace negotiations has gathered over half a million signatures.

Meanwhile this weekend will see dozens of protests will take place across towns, cities, and capitals from Italy to Germany, Portugal, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, France, and Belgium. We will all be calling for an end to the Russian invasion, and for our respective governments to back peace talks instead of fuelling the conflict with more weapons.

Those attending all demonstrations have been asked to tweet images and reports using #EuropeForPeace.

Join CND’s national demonstration to stop the war in Ukraine – Saturday 25 February.

This week the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists pushed forward the hands of the Doomsday Clock ten seconds, in large part due to the war in Ukraine and Russia’s nuclear threats. Now standing at 90 seconds to midnight, this is the closest we have ever been to nuclear war.

With the invasion approaching its first year, the conflict shows no signs of ending as heavy weapons continue to flow into Ukraine risking further escalation. Join CND and Stop the War Coalition for this urgent demonstration calling for an end to the fighting, an end to the nuclear threats, and for a peaceful solution to the war before it’s too late.

  • Saturday, 25 February 2023

National Demonstration 25th February 2023

At the end of February it will be one year since Russia invaded Ukraine. As with all wars millions of ordinary people have suffered, vast numbers of refugees have been displaced and thousands of troops on both sides have been killed. Clearly the longer the war goes on the more suffering will occur. Rather than sending more arms and weaponry to Ukraine, as the US and its allies are doing, ending the war will only be achieved through peace talks and diplomacy. In the absence of negotiation the danger of escalation, possibly nuclear escalation, is very real. This is why we demand peace talks now.

Stop the War has opposed the invasion and the war since it began. To mark this dreadful one year anniversary we have called a national demonstration in central London for Saturday 25 February. Please join us and make our demands heard: stop the war in Ukraine – peace talks now!

National Demonstration 25th February 2023

At the end of February it will be one year since Russia invaded Ukraine. To mark the day, we have called a national demonstration in central London on Saturday 25 February at midday to say No To War.

From the very beginning, the Stop the War Coalition demanded ‘Russian Troops Out,’ we also opposed the NATO expansion, which was one of the causes of the war and the rapid military escalation in the conflict.

One year on, the situation is deadlocked and it is clear there can be no winners in this war, that is why we need to be on the streets to demand Peace Talks Now.

The death toll is huge. Casualties are in the hundreds of thousands, with millions displaced. Instead of banging the drums of war, the west should be advocating and encouraging negotiations, diplomacy and peace.

Commit now to join the demonstration. But also promote this widely, we need to make this as big as possible.

In the run up to the demo, share, share, share on social media, in your Whatsapp groups and to your mailing lists.

Location TBD and list of speakers announced soon!

National Demo London 25 Feb

The shooting down of the Chinese ‘spy balloon’ by the US is the kind of incident that can take the world to the brink of war.

That it happened at all is a sign of terrifying level of tension between the great powers.

The war in Ukraine is a disaster for the people of that country, it is also massively contributing to global tension.

As the war intensifies, the West ramps up military support for Ukraine and Zelensky demands fighter planes from Europe and the US, it is crucial the anti-war movement responds.

Stop the War and CND have called a demonstration demanding peace talks now on Saturday 25 February, the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This will be part of a Europe-wide weekend of marches and protests. We are asking everyone who opposes the carnage and wants to avoid widening war to join the demonstration.

We also urge you to do everything possible to publicise the demo. Please promote the event on social media, circulate leaflets and get in touch with your local Stop the War group to join local activity.

Assemble at BBC, Portland Place, W1A 1AA at 12 Noon. Marching to Trafalgar Square. Speakers include Tariq Ali, Brian Eno, German MP Sevim Dağdelen (Die Linke), Lowkey and many more to be announced soon.
