In recent years, Chinese authorities have been flouting human rights not only within their own borders, but around the world. At home, China has enforced one of the world’s strictest COVID-19 policies, attacked Hong Kong’s press freedom, and harassed its citizens over private conversations on social media. Abroad, it has undermined efforts to hold it accountable – voting to cancel a UN Human Rights Council debate on its treatment of the Uyghurs.
What are the prospects for human rights in China today? How is China suppressing global discussion of its human rights record? And could international pressure ever force China to change its repressive policies?
Next Tuesday, April 11, join Perry World House for a conversation with former Executive Director of Human Rights Watch Kenneth Roth and Economist Eyewitness Editor Gady Epstein about the prospects for human rights in China.
