Wages not Weapons: Join CND at the Tory party conference 2023

In just under two weeks time, Tory party members and MPs will descend on Manchester for their annual conference. After more than a decade in power, the Conservative government has lurched from crisis to crisis, leaving millions of people worried about the cost of living and the growing climate emergency. Meanwhile, successive prime ministers have made billions of pounds available for weapons and war – including £9 billion extra for nuclear weapons over the next five years – all while our public services continue to deteriorate.

In opposition to these warped spending priorities, CND will be there to spread our Wages not Weapons campaign, joining many more organisations at The People’s Assembly national demonstration taking place outside the conference.

We’re calling on supporters to join our peace bloc on the day and help spread the message that money for weapons is a political choice that would be better spent on fixing our public services, tackling the climate emergency, and promoting a foreign policy based on dialogue and cooperation.

  • Sunday, 1 October
  • Assemble on Oxford Road, Manchester from 12 noon

Coaches to and from the demonstration are being arranged by People’s Assembly groups across the country. Secure your space here. For other queries, contact [email protected]

Wages not Weapons: CND at the Tory party conference 2023

Despite failing spectacularly in managing the cost of living crisis or addressing the climate emergency, the Conservative government has succeeded at one thing in 2023 – approving massive increases in military spending – including £9 billion extra for nuclear weapons over the next five years!

With Tory party members and MPs set to descend on Manchester for their annual conference this autumn, CND will be there to spread our Wages not Weapons campaign at The People’s Assembly national demonstration taking place outside.

We’re calling on supporters to join our peace bloc on the day and help spread the message that money for weapons is a political choice that would be better spent on fixing our public services, tackling the climate emergency, and promoting a foreign policy based on dialogue and cooperation.

Sun 1 October, 12pm – Assemble: Oxford Road, Manchester

Last month, outgoing Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, bragged that “we will spend over £50 billion on defence for the first time in our history. That is nearly £12 billion of cash investment a year higher than 2019 – when I started.” Contrast that with the £5bn cost of the real terms pay cut being given to public sector workers.

If we want security it should start with a decent housing, health and education spending – not weapons of mass destruction. That’s why we’re organising a Wages Not War bloc at the People’s Assembly Tory Party Conference Protest in Manchester on 1st October, alongside CND. More details to follow.
