Hybrid Event
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been the “Atoms for Peace” agency within the United Nations since 1956. In that time, shifting power dynamics and climate change challenges have complicated its mandate to assure that nuclear technologies are used for the global good.
Nuclear energy can still be controversial and cause for concern, though. In 2011, a tsunami caused a nuclear meltdown in Fukushima, Japan. Unfolding conflict between Israel and Gaza in the Middle East, coupled with the collapse of the Iran Nuclear Deal, are creating nuclear stress in the region. And the Zaporzhzhia power plant remains caught in the crosshairs of the Russian war in Ukraine.
Join us on November 7 as we sit down with
IAEA Director General
Rafael Mariano Grossi to discuss how the
IAEA works across such politically charged and environmentally precarious contexts, and what happens when countries don’t cooperate.
