INVITATION TO A PEACE POLE CEREMONY on Saturday April 6th at 3pm in St Ethelwold’s Garden, 30 East St Helen Street, Abingdon
We invite you to a ceremony to celebrate the installation of a Peace Pole in St Ethelwold’s garden on Saturday April 6th at 3pm.
A Peace Pole is an internationally recognized symbol of the hopes and dreams of the entire human family, standing vigil in silent prayer for peace on earth. Each Peace Pole bears the message “May Peace Prevail On Earth” in different languages on each of its four or six sides. There are estimated to be over 250,000 Peace Poles, in every country in the world.
The Peace Pole is being erected by Abingdon Peace Group using a generous donation by the family of Beryl Davidson, a Buddhist, Quaker, and long-time member of Abingdon Peace Group until her death last year. It embodies the vision of Dorothea Pickering, founder of the Fellowship of St Ethelwold’s, who created St Ethelwold’s House as a space of spiritual peace and refreshment, open to all.
The Mayor of Abingdon, Cllr Gwyneth Lewis, will dedicate the Peace Pole at a short ceremony in the garden, and we will then share tea and cake.
The attached leaflet gives more details, and I also attach the Community Affirmation we will use at the ceremony.
There is no need to let us know if you can come, but we hope you can!
In peace,
Sally Reynolds, on behalf of Abingdon Peace Group.
PS the languages on our Peace Pole are English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Arabic, Irish-Gaelic & Welsh. Are you a speaker of any of these? If so, would you be willing to read out the inscription in your own language during the ceremony? Please let us know if you are!
