A cultural evening of music, poetry, and live performance to commemorate the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Event Date: 8th August 2024
Location: Sands Films, 82 St Marychurch Street, Rotherhithe, London, SE16 4HZ, 7:30-9:30pm AND INTERNET

Join CND and Sands Films for a cultural evening of music, poetry, and live performance to commemorate the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Renowned actor, playwright, and CND supporter Michael Mears has adapted John Hersey’s seminal book Hiroshima for the stage in The Priest’s Tale. In this performance, Michael plays Father Wilhelm, a German Jesuit priest who survived the bombing of Hiroshima and whose testimony of the horrific events gives a “clear-eyed depiction of the pity of war… and of the terror wrought at the start of our nuclear age.”

Live music for the performance will be provided by London-based Japanese violinist Chihiro Ono and will be followed by Q&A.

We are also delighted to announce that our special guest for the evening is award-winning poet Antony Owen. Antony is one of today’s leading writers of peace poetry, a CND Peace Education patron, and will be reading some of his works and sharing reflections on the bombing’s 79th anniversary.
