Invitation to August 12 event:
Common Security, governance and nuclear threats
plus, Updates on the 2024 NPT Prep Com

Devastating armed conflicts and unresolved disputes have increased the risk of nuclear war and stimulated a renewed nuclear arms race. States Parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty met at the UN in Geneva from July 22-August 2 to discuss these issues.

Civil society representatives presented a number of recommendations to the NPT to advance common securitydiplomacy, conflict resolution, nuclear war prevention and disarmament. These included proposals for better use of the International Court of Justice to resolve international disputes peacefully, establishment of additional regional nuclear-weapon-free zones (in the Middle East and NE Asia) and a renewed focus on a nuclear weapons convention or framework agreement for nuclear disarmament.

Some of these recommendations were supported by a number of NPT States Parties, as reflected in the Chair’s Summary Report which was released on the final day of the conference. See, for example, NPT Chair’s Summary includes some of NoFirstUse Global’s proposals and 2024 NPT Chair’s summary reveals renewed interest in a Nuclear Weapons Convention.

Join our event on August 12 at which where leading civil society representatives to the NPT Prep Com will give updates on how these ideas were advanced at the NPT, what traction they gained, and where to from now.

Ayleen Roy presenting the interfaith appeal Pursue peace and justice through Common Security – not nuclear weapons to the NPT. The appeal was endorsed by more than 80 faith-based organizations and an additional 180 faith and values-based leaders and individuals.
