Small Signals, Big Backlash  

Israel has reacted strongly to Britain’s trade sanctions on the illegal settlements in the West Bank.

Immediately after foreign secretary Ed Miliband’s address to the commons, a series of counter measures were announced by his Israeli counterpart, Gideon Sa’ar. 

He told a press conference: “The accusations made today by the Foreign Secretary in the British Parliament were outrageous lies.” 

Israel’s president, Isaac Herzog, also called the ban “a grave miscalculation, a decision that will fall on the wrong side of history”.

Israel then announced that it would close Britain’s consulate in Jerusalem in response. UK representatives assigned to the US-led Gaza coordination mission for Gaza were to be expelled, while British training of Palestinian Authority forces in the West Bank would be terminated.

Additionally, Israel has barred 12 British nationals from entering the country, including 11 MPs. Among them are Jeremy Corbyn, John McDonnell and Zarah Sultana, as well as all five sitting Green Party MPs.

Britain’s new measures mark something of a break with established policy, but some British diplomats have quietly admitted the move is largely symbolic.

And as our new analysis shows, it leaves the UK-Israel military relationship intact, with no substantive changes to intelligence sharing or the supply of weapons and key components, and no meaningful measures to stop the genocide in Gaza and pursue accountability.

Senior Labour MP Pat McFadden appeared to confirm as much: “There’s a very strong relationship between Israel and many parts of the UK, and I’m sure that will continue”, he told Times Radio.

None of this has quelled the fury.

Groups linked to the pro-Israel lobby in the UK responded with unanimous outrage, levelling a series of hyperbolic accusations.

Labour Friends of Israel, the Board of Deputies and the Jewish Labour Movement all claimed the move threatens the safety and security of British Jews.

The Jewish Leadership Council suggested the government was capitulating to Islamic extremists. 

That such vehemence has been provoked by such limited measures has been revealing.

For decades, Israel has operated with extraordinary impunity in Britain. Successive British governments have not merely tolerated its increasing colonisation of Palestinian territory and abuses against Palestinians, but enabled them – providing diplomatic cover, political protection, and material support such as arms and other military equipment.

This is one of the few occasions on which British policy has appeared to pivot, and it comes three years into Israel’s genocide, in which Britain has been complicit. Even now, it treats Israeli settlers as something of an anomalous problem, stopping short of directing sanctions at Israel itself. Miliband explicitly ruled out full sanctions on Israel.

If there was ever any doubt about what happens when Britain departs from the script, even marginally, Israel’s response has dispelled it.
