Thank you for taking the time to tell the Home Office what you think about their proposal to scale back or completely shut down the #spycops inquiry.
No doubt you’ve received a standardised response from them, asking you to fill in their multiple choice questionnaire instead, even though it doesn’t include the option we want, which is for the Undercover Policing Inquiry to be allowed to complete the work that’s already underway, and fulfil its original ‘Terms of Reference#. Anything else would represent a huge waste of public money, and stop us from getting the answers we need.
It seems likely that some people within the Home Office had already made their decision before announcing this sham ‘consultation’ exercise. And we know that for all their claims to care about those who were the subject of these intrusive, abusive undercover operations, they’re not really going to change their minds just because of what several thousand of us say.
So, we’ve got another favour to ask you…
We’re keeping the pressure on the Home Office from all sides, and that includes politicians. So we’re holding a briefing for Members of Parliament.
This will be next Tuesday (15th September), from 3-5pm, in Portcullis House.
We’ve written to every single MP’s office to invite them, but realistically, they’ll probably only attend if they think their constituents want them to. This is where you come in!
We’re hoping that between us, we have people living in as many constituencies as possible across the UK. To make this as quick and painless as possible for you, we’ve set up an online tool: https://ucpi.uk/consultation/mpbriefing.html
If you live in the UK, just enter your postcode and it will automatically generate an email to your MP.
Just like the Home Office letter, it’s best if you personalise it and make it obvious how much you care about the issue.
If you could do this in the next 24 hours we’d really appreciate it. But even if you send it over the weekend, your MP will see how important this is, and will maybe support our campaign. Even if they can’t make it to the meeting on Tuesday, they’ll receive our Parliamentary Briefing, which explains how they can help (i.e. by supporting an ‘Early Day Motion’ and/or tabling a ‘Written Parliamentary Question’).
Please share this message, and the attached flyer, on social media and with your friends…
Thank you again!
Campaign Opposing Police Surveillance
P.S. we don’t send many of these emails, but as always, if you want to stop receiving them, just reply and put ‘unsubscribe’ in the subject line
