We have two new Britain Palestine Project podcast episodes to share with you this week, looking at two very different, but increasingly interconnected, questions of power, politics and accountability.

Situation Report: A Turning Point in Britain’s Policy on Palestine?

In the latest edition of The Situation Report, Britain Palestine Project trustees Andrew Whitley and Sir Vincent Fean examine what they see as a significant shift in British policy towards Israel and Palestine following Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband’s announcement of new measures relating to Israel’s illegal settlements and Gaza.

Sir Vincent argues that the change is significant not only in substance, but in tone and determination: for the first time in his 39-year diplomatic career, he says, he has heard a British Foreign Secretary link condemnation of Israeli settlement activity with concrete action.

Andrew and Vincent discuss the threatened E1 settlement project, Israel’s response and the closure of the British Consulate in Jerusalem, the growing influence of settlers within Israeli politics and state institutions, and the situation in Gaza.

They also look ahead to possible Palestinian elections and ask what role Britain should play in supporting genuine democratic renewal.

Is this a turning point in Britain’s approach and, crucially, will a change in policy translate into meaningful change on the ground?

Who decides what you see when you open your social media feed – and, perhaps more importantly, what you don’t see?

Our second new episode features Issam Hijazi, founder of UpScrolled, the independent social media platform built on a simple principle: social media should serve people, not silence them.

Issam, who is Palestinian-Jordanian-Australian, created UpScrolled after witnessing what he describes as the digital erasure of Palestinian voices and experiencing the suppression of Palestine-related content himself.

We discuss shadow banning, algorithms, censorship, privacy, bots and political influence, and ask how much power a small number of technology companies now have over the information we receive.

Can we have social media without manipulative algorithms? How do we protect free speech while tackling hate and harmful content? And could ethical alternatives to Big Tech genuinely change who controls what we see?
