Latest CND campaign: People not Nukes

Today, CND has launched our new campaign ‘People not Nukes’. We’ve published a report showing that by halting the replacement of Britain’s nuclear-armed submarines the government could release £240 billion of public funds into the economy over the next thirty years. The report argues that by redirecting this money to where it is really needed, we can make the world safer, and transform our society for the better.

The report couldn’t come at a more critical time.

Our public services are at breaking point. Another cost-of-living crisis is looming. Climate breakdown is now an urgent national security threat. But instead of taking action to solve these crises, the government is wasting hundreds of billions on nuclear weapons and war – making the situation even worse.

Redirecting £240 billion away from nukes, the government could instead:

• Boost the number of nurses working in our NHS by a third. That’s 220,000!
• Fund the construction of 140,000 affordable homes every year for thirty years, wiping out the social housing waiting list in less than seven years.
• Fund free school meals for every child for 46 years.
• Lift the debt burden on graduates by paying the fees for eight million students.
• Retrofit all homes in Britain within 11 years, significantly reducing carbon emissions and energy bills.

We’re at the TUC this week, where trade union delegates representing millions of public sector workers are meeting to debate policies including the motion ‘Building real security’ from the University and College Union urging for the advancement of a ‘trade union vision of security based decent work, quality public services, equality, climate action, democracy on peace.’ We’ll be talking to hundreds of delegates and raising our ‘People not Nukes’ campaign with them all.

We are also asking you to write to your MP, urging them to read the new report’s findings, support the scrapping of Trident and its replacement, and advocate instead for the £240 billion to be invested in tackling the real security threats we face. You can use our lobby tool here.

Local groups are also gearing up to start promoting the ‘People not Nukes’ campaign, organising street stalls, lobbying MPs and recruiting new supporters our cause.
