The Department of Energy is pushing a “Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Hub” on so-called willing communities. One of them is in Idaho. But, says Leigh Ford of the Snake River Alliance, “we’re not buying it.”

The DOE’s commercial high-level nuclear waste problem hasn’t gone away with all of it still at the reactor sites. Now the agency is pushing the idea of nuclear “hubs” promising new reactors, jobs and even reprocessing. Worse still, in the case of Idaho, the House there passed a bill prohibiting local governments from rejecting these facilities. This is in line with a general policy of the Trump administration to remove public intervention while dismantling or flouting environmental laws. READ MORE
