It’s been a hell of a week for UK defence. Seemingly out of nowhere, it was announced that almost all training for British Army Regular and Reserve units above company/squadron level, unless for operational deployments, had been unilaterally cancelled, with immediate effect. In itself, this is a pretty serious issue – but Defence Eye has been briefed about far more of the issues behind this headline.



Defence Eye has been told that there is a high likelihood that the Aldermaston (and Burghfield) infrastructure was at such a low ebb, that there is an emergency requirement to invest in the nuclear estate – but the previous spending plans had this spending of the end of the 2020s and early-2030s. The worrying thing is that if this is correct, Aldermaston/Burghfield might have got to a stage where their nuclear certifications were at risk.
