The Battlefield Has Changed….To Space

REGIS TREMBLAY

SEP 17

In 2012, I made what would become one of the most important films of my life: The Ghosts of Jeju.

The film told the story of Jeju Island, South Korea, and the decades of conflict surrounding the struggle of its people against the construction of a major U.S.-linked naval base on the island.

But buried within that film was a four-minute interview clip that, at the time, seemed to many like a warning about the future.

In that clip, Bruce Gagnon spoke about the United States’ plans for the militarization and domination of space—what he referred to as the emerging “Vision for 2020.”

He was talking about the transformation of space into another arena of military power, and about the implications that could follow if the United States sought to establish dominance beyond the Earth.

Fourteen years later, I decided to go back and look at those four minutes again.

What did Bruce Gagnon actually say in 2012?

What was known about U.S. space policy at the time?

And how much of what he warned about was rooted in documented plans, rather than speculation?

This video is an examination of that four-minute clip, the history behind it, and the remarkable evolution of the American military vision for space since 2012.

Sometimes, the most revealing warnings are the ones we don’t fully understand until years later.

Sometimes, history doesn’t announce itself.

Sometimes, it appears quietly—in a few minutes of film, a conversation, or a warning that most people simply pass by.

At the time, I didn’t know just how significant those four minutes might become.
