Sizewell C has received planning approval to build tunnel components at a site in Avonmouth, previously used by Hinkley Point C. The pre-cast concrete segments and tunnel heads will be used for marine tunnels at the new Suffolk nuclear plant, and will be transported by sea, meeting a commitment to move 80% of materials by rail and sea. The site, 10km from Bristol city centre, previously was used to successfully deliver components for sister project Hinckley Point C. Nigel Cann, CEO of Sizewell C, said:

Sizewell C receives planning approval for tunnel segment facility. The factory in Bristol will produce 38,000 pre-cast concrete segments. The UK’s Sizewell C nuclear power plant has secured planning permission for a tunnel segment production facility in Avonmouth, Bristol. The factory will manufacture the 38,000 pre-cast concrete segments, as well as tunnel heads, for Sizewell C’s three marine tunnels. The completed components will be transported to the Sizewell C construction site in Suffolk by rail and sea, supporting the project’s commitment to move at least 60% of construction materials by rail and sea. Subject to conditions being met, production of the tunnel segments and heads is expected to begin in 2028.
