National CND: US space weapons / Iran to vote on leaving NPT / upcoming CND events

Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament

The US has announced for the first time that it has deployed a weapon into the Earth’s orbit. The US have not stated what type of weapon it is – it could be kinetic, like a hit-to-kill missile, or non-kinetic, like a laser capable of disabling satellites and jammers. The development risks an arms race with Russia, China, and possibly India looking to place similar systems into space.

A major concern is that a technical problem or fault with an early warning satellite could be interpreted as a hostile act, prompting a nuclear war.

Iran to vote on leaving NPT

It’s been reported that Iran’s parliament is preparing to vote on whether to leave the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. This would be a serious setback for non-proliferation.

Diplomatic efforts to resolve tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme have been repeatedly sabotaged by Israel and the US through the continued illegal bombing of Iran. It was following the 2025 bombing of Iran’s nuclear facilities by Israel, that Iran’s parliament first considered withdrawing from the NPT.

The most effective way to ensure Iran remains within the NPT is for the US and Israel to end the illegal war on that country. The US must engage in a diplomatic route to resolve the crisis. The British government should be using its diplomatic influence to lobby the US and Israel to attend the UN conferences to secure a Treaty for a nuclear weapons-free Middle East.

CND at Labour Party Conference

Andy Burnham’s first Labour Party conference as Prime Minister starts on Sunday in Liverpool and CND will be there to promote our new ‘People not Nukes’campaign. With nuclear dangers rising and the cost-of-living crisis deepening, we’ll be arguing against military spending hikes and continued nuclear weapons spending.

AUKUS: Dimensions of a Dubious Submarine Deal – CND webinar, 24 September

Last week marked five years of the AUKUS pact, the tri-national deal that will see Britain and the US will supply nuclear-powered submarines to Australia. While conventionally armed, this marks the first time that a non-Nuclear Weapons State will receive such nuclear technology. It has been met with opposition from within the Australian and international trade union and peace movements, who are warning about rising costs, proliferation risks, and an arms race in the region.

To learn more about this dubious deal, CND and Scottish CND are holding a joint webinar on Thursday, 24 September. We’ll be joined by experts from Australia and Britain to discuss the various aspects of AUKUS and why it must be opposed.

With guest speakers Sybilla George, a writer and researcher from Melbourne; Tim Deere-Jones, a marine scientist and researcher; and Sophie Bolt, CND General Secretary. Chaired by Lynn Jamieson, Scottish CND Chair.
