CND has just returned from Labour Party Conference where, ahead of Andy Burham’s leader’s speech, we organised a die-in beneath a 20-foot inflatable mushroom cloud, to raise awareness about the growing nuclear threats. We called on the Prime Minister to cancel the replacement of Britain’s nuclear weapons and invest in our public services and climate action instead.
We’d like to thank all our supporters who contributed to help make this happen. You can read some coverage of the action in the Canary.
In the conference, both Defence Secretary, Wes Streeting and Chancellor John Healey, reinforced the government’s ‘war-ready’ agenda, announcing £6 billion for dry docks for Britain’s new generation of nuclear-armed submarines. Yet in the conference arena at our CND stall, we engaged with delegates about our People not Nukes campaign.
If you haven’t done so already, you can use our easy lobby tool to write to your MP, urging them to read our new People not Nukes report and to support the redirecting of the £240 billion for Britain’s new nuclear weapons into saving lives instead.
CND at Green Party Conference
CND is heading to Brighton for Green Party Conference, running from Friday 2 to Sunday 4 October.
If you’re down there – or live nearby – don’t miss CND’s fringe:
What are the real security threats we face and how do we solve them?
Date: Saturday, 3 October
Time: 1.30pm
Location: Friends Meeting House, Ship Street, BN1 1AF
Speakers include: Denis Fernando, Senior Rights and Justice Campaigner, Friends of the Earth; Sophie Bolt, General Secretary, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament; Professor Jan Selby, University of Leeds. Chaired by Paul Ingram, Green Party
Come along, bring a friend and help make sure the Green Party conference hears the message loud and clear: people need real security, not nuclear weapons to make us safer.
Can you volunteer? We’ll be leafleting outside conference throughout Friday and on Saturday morning to let people know about the fringe. We’re looking for volunteers who can spare some time to help. If you can help, please email [email protected].
If you’re attending as a delegate, make sure to come and visit us at stall 23. Show us this email to claim your FREE CND badge and lanyard and help us represent the campaign around the conference.
