Israel has no right to close the British Consulate-General in Jerusalem.
Unlawful, unfriendly, unwise.
The Government of Israel announced on 8 September that it will close the British Consulate-General in 30 days. That unilaterally imposed deadline expires tomorrow.
Israel has no right to do this. The Britain Palestine Project legal analysis, endorsed by BPP patron Dominic Grieve KC, is here.
My heart goes out to the 27 British diplomats and especially to the 50 loyal, hard-working Palestinian staff of the Consulate-General in Sheikh Jarrah. In addition to the pressures of oppressive Israeli military occupation, they now have to deal with uncertainty and thus anxiety. I know that they will continue to conduct themselves with dignity and professionalism.
This is not the last word on the matter.
Below are a couple of recent interviews, with Al Jazeera and Times Radio.
With best wishes,
Sir Vincent Fean
