The government needs to tackle the cost of living crisis – not fund war and nukes
Today, the Chancellor announced another £5 billion of investment for war and nuclear weapons, yet provided no increase for vital public services like health and education which are at breaking point. And, Chancellor Healey made clear in his budget, that he is ‘thinking hard’ about further cuts to public services to make sure the British government reaches the NATO military spending target of 3% GDP by 2030.
But public opinion is firmly against these dangerously wrong economic priorities. A new Survation poll shows that 62% think that the Chancellor should prioritise tackling the cost of living crisis, not increasing military spending.
This is no surprise. Millions of people are struggling with rising energy, food and housing costs. Our public services are at breaking point. Meanwhile the government still plans to spend at least £240 billion on Britain’s nuclear weapons system over the next 30 years.
Just imagine what that money could do instead.
220,000 extra nurses. 3.7 million affordable homes. Free school meals for every child for 46 years. Solar panels on every home.
This is the message at the heart of CND’s People Not Nukes campaign. We believe public money should be spent saving lives, not destroying them.
Please donate today to help us raise £20,000 for our People Not Nukes campaign in 2027.
Your donation will help CND challenge the government’s nuclear spending plans, lobby ministers and MPs, reach thousands of people with powerful advertising campaigns, and build alliances with trade unions, health campaigns, climate groups and anti-poverty organisations.
We need to make sure the People Not Nukes message is heard loud and clear in 2027. Together, we can challenge the government’s priorities and campaign for a safer, fairer future.
In peace,
Sophie Bolt
