Budget 2026: More money for war whilst cost-of-living crises worsens
The government’s latest budget makes its priorities clear: billions more for military spending, while the cost of living crisis deepens and our public services remain under huge amounts of pressure.
With plans to reach NATO’s 3.5% GDP military spending target by 2035, the Chancellor is doubling down on a dangerous course that risks leaving ordinary people to pay the price through further cuts, insecurity and worsening living standards. Meanwhile, the urgent human security issues facing our communities — from unaffordable energy and insecure housing to a health service at breaking point — remain neglected.
But the public does not support these priorities. A strong majority want the government to tackle the cost of living crisis rather than pour more money into war and the military
Billions to be spent on re-developing nuclear bomb factory in Aldermaston
The Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) is due to submit a planning application proposing to massively expand and rebuild its main complex in Aldermaston, Berkshire.
The site has been responsible for manufacturing and maintaining the UK’s nuclear warheads since 1950. These new proposals form part of the government’s broader plans to spend £15 billion on developing a new generation of nuclear warheads, called the Astraea A21.
CND has been raising awareness of Aldermaston’s role in producing weapons of mass destruction for decades. We now need to build a strong opposition to the government’s deadly nuclear expansion plans and the costly re-development of this nuclear bomb factory.
