Nuclear Free Local Authorities and Mayors for Peace newsletter

Posted: 28th February 2021

I attach the NFLA UK & Ireland and the Mayors for Peace global newsletters for February and information on events looking at the 10th anniversary of the Fukushima disaster.

The NFLA February newsletter can be found on the NFLA website:

https://www.nuclearpolicy.info/wp/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/NFLA_February_2021_Newsletter.pdf

It includes information on all NFLA publications, meetings, involvement on core issues, media releases, letters, and forthcoming meetings.

We have five meetings in March and April, four of which are being opened out to interested NGO colleagues:

I would also like to attach the global Mayors for Peace newsletter, who we work closely with. This outlines some of its activity with the entry into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and other matters – http://www.mayorsforpeace.org/english/statements/newsflash/News_2102_E.pdf

Finally, next month will be the milestone of the 10th anniversary of the Fukushima disaster. This was the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl and there remains many impacts to the area, including what may be done with huge amounts of contaminated water on the site.

NFLA would like to make you aware of three web-based conferences that you may like to attend:

  • Tomorrow, February 27th, the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) are holding a full day conference with expert speakers across all the safety and environmental aspects of the Fukushima disaster. If you would like to register for it then please go to their dedicated webpage: https://www.fukushima-disaster.de/information-in-english.html
  • On March 11th, Japanese NGOs will be holding a full day conference on the local issues and environmental concerns. Some of these sessions will be held in English. If you would like to attend it then please go to their dedicated webpage:  https://20210311.genjiren.com/en/
  • On March 12th, the NFLA is joining with Cities for a Nuclear Free Europe and the Alliance of Regions for the Phasing-out of Nuclear Power in Europe are holding a morning networking meeting. In the afternoon, an open conference organised by the Vienna Institute of Ecology will include speakers from Greenpeace Japan, Mayors for a Nuclear Power Free Japan and a look at new software that can show the effects of a nuclear accident in Europe. The agenda is attached. If you are interested in attending it then please email me and I can pass your details on to the conference organisers.

Please disseminate these newsletters and information on forthcoming meetings to fellow councillors, relevant officers, and NGO networks.

Yours sincerely,

Sean Morris
