Dear Carry,As many of you will be aware, the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) entered into international law just over a month ago, and 54 states have now ratified the Treaty.
However, the UK government continues to refuse to engage with the Treaty, even though the elimination of nuclear weapons is on the horizon.
So today, we are asking that members of the health community and Medact take action in putting pressure on the UK government to sign up to the Treaty.
We have put together resources for health workers to join people around the world in encouraging our local councils to show their support for the TPNW, through taking part in the ICAN Cities Appeal:
- Guide to lobbying your local council
- Template email to a councillor
- ICAN Cities Appeal motion
- Briefing on health & environmental impacts of nuclear weapons
We have also created an interactive map so you can see whether your council has signed up to the ICAN Cities Appeal or Mayors for Peace initiatives, and whether a fellow Medact member in your local area is interested in taking action.
MAP OF LOCAL COUNCILS AND RESOURCESIf you intend to try to get your local council to show their support for the UK to sign up to the TPNW, and/or you would like to be put in touch with another Medact member for support, please e-mail [email protected].
This is the beginning of the end of nuclear weapons. I hope that you will join me and thousands of others around the world in working toward the abolition of these weapons of mass destruction.
In solidarity,
Reem Abu-Hayyeh
