Ten Years On: the people of Fukushima are still suffering

Posted: 12th March 2021

Today we remember the world’s worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. The catastrophe at Fukushima, its tragic human impact, and its devastating environmental consequences must not be forgotten – and its lessons must be learnt.

Advocates of nuclear claim the industry is safe but as the meltdown at Fukushima’s three reactors showed, even a single accident can be catastrophic.

Tens of thousands of people remain displaced from their homes.Greenpeace has recently warned that those returning are experiencing unsafe levels of radiation. And the Japanese government is planning to release one million tonnes of contaminated radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean.

Dirty, Dangerous, Expensive

In the decade following Fukushima, a number of countries including industrial powers like Germany have dramatically cut their dependence on nuclear power. The question is, if some of the largest and wealthiest countries in the world have learnt the lessons of Fukushima, why can’t Britain?

As CND has consistently warned, nuclear power is dirty, dangerous and expensive. But being right isn’t enough. We need your support today to continue our campaigning activity.
Sign the No to Nuclear Power PetitionThe UK government wants to bring a new generation of reactors online, spending huge amounts of public money in the process and leaving Britain with an insoluble problem of dangerous nuclear waste. If we’re to stop that from happening, we need to draw on what has always been CND’s biggest asset: its members and supporters who fight for a nuclear-free world.
