Fish & Hinkley C

Posted: 24th March 2021

A new report has estimated that 182 million fish could be at risk of

swimming into the Hinkley Point C cooling tunnels every year. Hinkley Point
C in Bridgwater will be the first new nuclear power station built in the UK
in over 20 years. The 230-acre plant is being constructed by the French
energy company EDF and is expected to be operational for 60 years following
its projected completion in 2023. This latest report, compiled by the
Hinkley Point C Stakeholders reference group for the Welsh government, has
raised concerns around the plant’s impact on fish species in the Severn
estuary. The risk of fish loss has been estimated following the decision to
remove an acoustic fish deterrent (AFD) from the plant, which EDF applied
to remove the requirement for in 2019. The AFD uses sound to deter certain
fish from entering the power station’s cooling tunnels. The deterrent is
understood to be less effective for fish with less developed hearing. The
removal of the AFD is currently going through the planning appeal process.
