Ending the Nuclear Threat: Taking a deeper approach to build success

On January 22, 2021, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons entered into force, demonstrating a commitment of non-nuclear states to advance the global prohibition of nuclear weapons.
The problem, however, is that not one of the nuclear armed or allied states has joined or indicated support for the treaty. In order to move these countries to abandon their reliance on nuclear weapons, we must go deeper than mere calls for them to support disarmament. We must address the reasons why nuclear deterrence still holds sway.
A number of initiatives and events are taking such a deeper approach to nuclear disarmamentin order to transform the political environment and pave the way to a nuclear-weapon-free world. These include:
- The UNFOLD ZERO platform which highlights UN processes to resolve conflicts and achieve security without reliance on the threat or use of force;
- The Move the Nuclear Weapons Money campaign which seeks to counter the vested interests of the nuclear weapons industry in keeping an arms race running;
- The Women’s Appeal for Human Security, public health, peace and sustainable development, released on International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament last year;
- A webinar on Tuesday March 30 on the topic The Enduring Nuclear Threat: A Deeper Look, organised by United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ);
- The Youth Fusion Elders initiative which draws on the experience and lessons of Elders in the nuclear disarmament movement to inform the next generation of activists.
