On January 22, 2021, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons entered into force, demonstrating a commitment of non-nuclear states to advance the global prohibition of nuclear weapons.
The problem, however, is that not one of the nuclear armed or allied states has joined or indicated support for the treaty. In order to move these countries to abandon their reliance on nuclear weapons, we must go deeper than mere calls for them to support disarmament. We must address the reasons why nuclear deterrence still holds sway.
A number of initiatives and events are taking such a deeper approach to nuclear disarmamentin order to transform the political environment and pave the way to a nuclear-weapon-free world. These include:
