Trident Debate

Posted: 8th December 2010

October 4th

John Glen, Salisbury MP, and Kate Hudson, General Secretary CND, debated ‘Future Defence: Moving on from Trident’ at the Conservative Party Conference, a fringe event organised by CND.

Kate confirmed that there is a positive trend towards global nuclear disarmament, arguing cogently against Britain retaining nuclear weapons. John Glen believes that the first duty of a government is to defend the country, hence the UK needs a nuclear deterrent. He maintained that the amount going on nuclear weapons is on the whole a ‘small amount’, implying that it is worth it.

Thanks to Ulla Grant of Birmingham CND we have her notes on the debate, revealing how we in Salisbury can follow up this debate with our MP, as well as correspondence with him that some of us have begun.
