New anti-uranium mining government coalition formed in Greenland

Posted: 19th April 2021

Dear all,

I write this mail to you on behalf of NOAH Friends of the Earth Denmark because you have signed the declaration recommending a moratorium on large scale mining and oil and gas extraction in Greenland or taken an interest in this initiative to promote an Arctic sanctuary. In NOAH, we thought that you might find the following news encouraging:

On Friday last week, Muté B. Egede, Greenland’s newly elected prime minister from the centre/left Inuit Ataqatigiit and Hans Enoksen from the nationalist Partii Naleraq announced that the two parties have formed a government coalition. On the to-do list in the coalition agreement is shutdown of the Kuannersuit/Kvanefjeld project and adoption of new anti-uranium legislation. The latter will have an impact on other uranium mining projects in Southern Greenland.

However, the new government will face a series of environmental challenges, not least due to the fact that there are now 90 active large scaling mining projects (prospecting, exploration and exploitation) in Greenland and not only 70 as mentioned in the declaration. It would be fair to say that a lot of international attention will be focused on the new Greenlandic government and its environmental strategy in the future.

       best regards
