Afghanistan: 20 years of bloody conflict for what?
After 20 years of conflict this week has seen the vast majority of U.S. and British troops withdrawing from Afghanistan. Afghanistan has been left devastated after this prolonged and bloody war, a war which has cost the lives of almost 3,000 US and British troops, over 100,000 Afghani fighters and military personnel and at least 50,000 Afghani civilians – this latter figure is almost certainly a huge underestimate.
The war has achieved nothing except the destruction of a country and increased instability both in Afghanistan and the region as a whole. As the generals and politicians wring their hands it is up to us to remind them where responsibility lies.
