Campaign to report the UK to the UN for breaking international law

Posted: 19th July 2021

Hello CND Groups! I hope you had a good weekend and are bearing up under the heat.

Last week we kicked off our campaign to report the UK to the UN for breaking international law with the government’s plan to greatly increase its number of nuclear warheads.

We asked legal experts to look into this and they found that the increase violates the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), not to mention being at odds with continuing reductions in the US and Russian arsenals.

But we need signatories to give the campaign the weight it deserves when we go to the President-delegate of the upcoming NPT Review Conference.

Can your group get involved in collecting signatures — perhaps you could hold a street stall specifically on this campaign?

We have paper copies of the petition available, and we have plenty of leaflets showing that this is not inevitable — not least our TPNW ones that clearly show that most of the world wants to end the threat of nuclear war.

And to give our campaign to report the UK to the UN more prominence, Michael, our press officer, has drafted a model press release which you can use to alert your local media.

The government’s decision is shocking and unaccpetable, but international law is clear and it’s up to us to inform the UN and ensure it doesn’t get away with it!

Very best wishes,
Rob
