* 45 month prison sentence for drone war whistleblower Daniel Hale
------------

On July 27, drone war whistleblower Daniel Hale was sentenced to 45 months in prison, having pled guilty in April to one count of violating the Espionage Act. The 33-year-old Air Force veteran first spoke out publicly against drone warfare in 2013, and later shared government documents that blew the whistle on secret watchlists, targeted drone killings, and other abuses in the “War on Terror.” The information Hale shared revealed gross human rights violations in the preparation of target lists for deadly attacks where 90% of the people killed were not the intended targets. In 2014, his home was raided by the FBI. Documents and electronic devices were seized, but he was not arrested until May, 2019. He was charged with five counts of violating the Espionage Act. Hale changed his plea last March, days before his scheduled trial.

Hale said at his sentencing hearing: “I am here because I stole something that was never mine to take – precious human life. For that I was compensated and given a medal. I couldn’t keep living in a world in which people pretended that things weren’t happening that were. Please your honor forgive me for taking papers instead of human lives.”

* Three arrests at German nuclear weapons base
------------

On the morning of July 19, six nuclear disarmament activists began a nonviolent action under the motto “Stop the next catastrophe: No Nukes! Stop the next catastrophe – Abolish nuclear weapons!”. They began to dig a tunnel near the fence of the Büchel air base with the goal of reaching the runway in order to stop flight operations. When Frits ter Kuile (the Netherlands), Susan Crane (U.S.) and Sigrid Eckert-Hoßbach (Germany) continued digging after repeated requests from police to stop, they were arrested. They were driven to the police station in Cochem and released there without charges.

* Australian weapons expo disrupted by 37 arrests over 6 days
------------

From late May into June, the seven-day Festival of Resistance outside the Brisbane (Australia) Convention Center was an organizing cauldron. More than 300 participants cooked up public education events and a smorgasbord of nonviolent direct actions to confront Land Forces 2021, the largest international weapons exposition in the Southern Hemisphere. During the week, persistent activists protested at the convention center and at nearby weapons manufacturers. They held banners on top of tanks (both inside and outside the convention center), performed street theater, climbed up on trucks, poured fake blood and blocked entrances. There were a total of 37 arrests.

* Women blockade Trident base in Scotland for 11 hours
------------

Early in the morning of April 30, members of Extinction Rebellion (XR) Scotland, with support from nuclear disarmament activists from Trident Ploughshares, set up a blockade at the north gate of the Faslane Trident submarine base in Scotland. Three women locked onto three planters they had placed in the road, which contained plants and flowers and were painted with the words “Safe”, “Green” and “Future”. After 11 hours, Sarah Krischer, Meg Peyton Jones and Naïs Huchet were cut out and arrested. They were charged with Breach of the Peace. With their action, they were demanding a future safe from the “threat of nuclear weapons and environmental destruction”, making the connections between the climate and ecological crisis and militarism.

* Protesters cited at Bangor Trident base Mother’s Day action
------------

Thirty people were present on May 8 at the Mother’s Day demonstration against Trident nuclear weapons at the Bangor submarine base in Washington state.  At around 2 p.m., five demonstrators entered the highway carrying two large banners stating, “Congress wants $1 trillion for nukes – What will be left for our children?” and “Trident Threatens All Life on Earth”. They blocked all incoming traffic at the Main Gate of Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor for over 20 minutes. They were then removed from the highway, cited for violating RCW 46.61.250, Pedestrians on roadways, and released at the scene. Those cited by the Washington state patrol: Brenda McMillan, Caroline Wildflower, Sue Ablao, Elizabeth Murray and Michael “Firefly” Siptroth.

* Five men arrested at Kansas City nuclear weapons plant
------------

More than 70 anti-nuclear activists gathered on Memorial Day at Kansas City’s National Security Campus, where non-nuclear parts are made for nuclear weapons. At the end of the rally, five men — Jim Hannah, Tom Mountenay, Brother Louis Rodemann, Henry Stoever and Brian Terrell — spoke about why they were making the choice to participate in a nonviolent civil resistance action that day. They then crossed the line onto the property of the nuclear weapons parts plant. The five protesters were issued tickets for trespass by the Kansas City police and released on site.
