Wales, small reactors
Wales advances its plans for small nuclear plants. Cardiff government set
to appoint leading executive to pursue Trawsfynydd project. The Cardiff
administration has hired Mike Tynan, a former UK operations manager for the
U.S. nuclear engineering group Westinghouse, as a new public development
company responsible for leveraging the “economic benefits” of small
reactors in Trawsfynydd, northern Wales. Rolls-Royce is at the forefront of
a consortium competing to become the first developer to obtain UK
regulatory approval. Last year, Trawsfynydd said it was “quite likely”
to accommodate the first reactor in the UK. Tynan, a former chairman of the
Nuclear Innovation Research Advisory Board, which provides independent
advice to the UK Minister, has been appointed Interim Chief Executive
Officer of Cwmni Egino, placing the new company on a “solid
foundation.”
