Nuclear Weapons Convoy Broke Down on Slip Road to M40

Posted: 18th May 2017

A nuclear weapon convoy passed Didcot, Abingdon and Oxford on the A34, and Bicester and Banbury on the M40 on Monday 15th May.
One of the convoy escort vehicles broke down on the sliproad to the M40 at Junction 9, Bicester, causing a long tail back of traffic on the northbound A34. This meant that the nuclear weapon convoy was parked on the hard shoulder of the M40 sliproad until the vehicle was attached to the convoy tow truck.

It was monitored by nukewatchers in it’s journey from Atomic Weapons Establishment Burghfield to Coulport, near the submarine base in Scotland.

This convoy breakdown has attracted some press coverage.
Trackers, photographers, press release writers working together. What a team!
