No New Cold War

As we have been arguing since it was announced last month, the AUKUS pact between the US, Britain and Australia has ramped up already alarming tensions between the US and China. The ‘pivot to the East’ – the polite term for the military escalation against China – is accelerating. US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, recently described taking on China as the US’s “greatest geopolitical test” and Biden’s 2022 budget draft locates the confrontation with China as it’s overriding concern.

By sharply increasing arms spending last year, sending the provocative flotilla the the South China Sea and joining the AUKUS pact, Johnson has signalled that Britain wants to be Washington’s most willing partner in the warmongering against China. 

Last night’s Stop the War steering committee agreed to step up our joint campaign with CND against this escalation. Following the very well attended AUKUS: Why We Say No Zoom meeting when we were joined by speakers from the US, Australia and New Zealand, we are in the process of widening our international networks with a view to holding an international conference and potentially a day of protest next year.
