COP26 Protests

War and militarism are amongst the unnamed enemies of our ecosphere. The US military is the biggest single consumer of oil on the planet and the last two decades of war have polluted on an unimaginable scale. It is therefore scandalous that military emissions are being excluded from the discussions at the COP26 Summit. If we want to end warming, we need to end war.

That’s why Stop the War is joining the nationwide protests calling on world leaders at the COP26 to take action to cut war and fight climate chaos.

We’ve got ‘Stop War – Stop Climate Chaos’ placards and leaflets to distribute to Stop the War supporters going on demonstrations anywhere in the UK. If you’d like some campaign materials just contact [email protected] now. Find your local protest below…

A broad and growing coalition of peace and environmental organisations are coming together for a protest this coming Thursday (4 November) in Glasgow. Join us on the Buchanan Steps Buchanan Street, in front of the Royal Concert Hall at 4-5pm.

There will also be a Peace and Demilitarisation Bloc on the Glasgow demo next Saturday (6 November). The bloc will assemble just north of the Tigress & Cubs Statue, Kelvingrove Park at 11:45 am. The bloc will join the march to Glasgow Green at 12:30.

Over 400 organisations and 20,000 people have already signed this petition calling for an end to the exclusion of military pollution from climate agreements. Addressed to COP26 participants that reads, in part, “We ask COP26 to set strict greenhouse gas emissions limits that make no exception for militarism.”

Julian Assange Case

Stop the War have been part of a series of protests against the extradition of Julian Assange this week with a number of MPs, including Jeremy Corbyn and Apsana Begum, joining them outside the Royal Courts of Justice. It’s now two and half years since Assange was dragged to a high security prison where he has remained ever since – simply for exposing war crimes. The charges against him must be dropped and he must be released immediately.

Here’s an update from John Rees on where the case currently stands…

20th Anniversary Appeal

Since the start of September we’ve held 7 national events! Highlights include our 20th Anniversary Conference in London, a huge fringe meeting at the Labour Party conference in Brighton, a meeting as part of the Tory Party Conference protests in Manchester and the launch of our archive at the Bishopsgate Institute.

All this activity means we are reaching new audiences and strengthening the anti-war movement nationwide. But it also costs £££ and that’s why we’re asking you today to reach into your pockets to donate to our 2021 Appeal.
