Government contemplates increasing police powers through the Police, Crime Sentencing and Courts Bill

Posted: 12th January 2022

“As the Government contemplates increasing police powers through the Police, Crime Sentencing and Courts Bill, defending the right to protest in public is of ever-increasing importance,” says Jamie Klingler, organiser of campaign group Reclaim These Streets.

Last year the police banned their vigil in south London for Sarah Everard, who was tragically murdered.

Reclaim These Streets are taking an important test case to clarify the law on protest, expose the police ban on their vigil as unlawful and secure protest rights for the future.

They’re now urgently raising funds before their court date on January 18th.

Can you help?

Jamie says on her case page: “We have the opportunity to greatly reinforce the legal protection for everyone’s human right to protest.

And just as importantly, if the police are given more power by Parliament, the precedent we hope to set will help hold them back from abusing those powers to suppress peaceful protest.”  Read more here.
