A series of recent roadblocks may force Japan to postpone its controversial plan to dump a large amount of radioactive water from the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean.
According to a report published Monday by The Asahi Shimbun, Japanese officials are skeptical that millions of tons of contaminated water will be dumped into the ocean as planned in spring 2023. This month saw the start of the digging of special ditches to hold water before it is released into the ocean. The excavation of a critical undersea tunnel, which was also scheduled to begin this month, has been pushed back until June.
