Call to reverse Russian aggression against Ukraine and prevent nuclear war

Posted: 24th February 2022

The World Future Council a co-founder of UNFOLD ZERO, has released a powerful statement today which:

  • Condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine as an illegal act of agression;
  • Promotes non-military ways to address and reverse the act of aggression particularly through the United Nations;
  • Highlights that there are grievances on all sides that need to be addressed, but not by armed conflict;
  • Asserts that President Putin and other complicit Russian leaders bear the responsibility for this act of aggression, not the Russian people.
Non-military means to address and reverse aggression

“We regret that better use was not made of diplomacy, mediation and common security mechanisms earlier in the conflict to address and resolve historical grievances.”

“We call now on the international community to use all non-military means possible, including those outlined in Articles 33 – 41 of the UN Charter, to contain and reverse the invasion of Ukraine, and to hold President Putin criminally responsible for the act of aggression, along with other Russian officials who are complicit.”

Russian invasion elevates nuclear threats

The World Future Council statement highlights that the Russian invasion of Ukraine elevates the threats and risks of a nuclear war by crisis escalation, miscalculation, intention or accident.

President Putin has made clear that nuclear threats are part of the equation by arranging, televising and personally witnessing a test of a nuclear-capable, hypersonic missile on Saturday, a few days before the invasion (see In Ukraine Crisis, the Looming Threat of a New Cold War. NY Times, Feb 19, 2022), and warning that any resistance to the invasion could be met by ‘consequences that you have never faced in your history’ (which infers a nuclear attack).
