Tory MPs press Rishi Sunak to fund huge expansion of nuclear power to end reliance on gas and
oil. The Chancellor is locked in a standoff with Boris Johnson over energy
plans that will require six or seven new nuclear power stations to be built. Tory
MPs have urged Rishi Sunak to “stop dragging his feet” and increase investment
in new nuclear power stations to boost the UK’s energy security. The Chancellor
is locked in a standoff with Boris Johnson over the Government’s energy
security strategy with Mr Sunak resisting demands to dramatically increase the
number of nuclear power stations over the next 25 years. The Prime Minister is
understood to want Britain to generate around 25 per cent of its electricity
from nuclear by 2050, which would require between six and seven new nuclear
power stations to be built. Ian Liddell-Grainger, Tory chair of the All-Party
Parliamentary Group on nuclear energy, said he fully supports the PM’s push to
get 25 per cent of the grid from nuclear. He said: “People realise that nuclear
is part of the future, it will need to be part of the mix and will be able to
produce a lot of power. How else are we going to produce the base power we need
to get away from a reliance on oil and gas imports? Onshore wind isn’t the answer.
Offshore wind will work but what happens when the wind doesn’t blow? He added:
“The more power stations we build the cheaper it becomes, and there is the
potential of small modular reactors, which will also boost capacity.”
